Realized we were in logging country when we saw this door handle at a restaurant. (Obama is not popular here.)

Crater Lake National Park. "The glowing avalanche deposits took years to cool. Hot gasses escaped through the fumaroles whose shapes are preserved in the Pinnacles."

Took a ranger-guided hike to the Watchman Overlook in the Crater Lake National Park to see this sunset over the Cascade Range.

Stayed in this historic cabin, formerly a forest fire chief's house, at the Union Creek Resort near the Crater Lake NP. (The resort is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.) Here is an excerpt from a framed document in the cabin:

"... Beginning shortly after 1900, Union Creek served as “home base” for many Forest Service employees over the years. This particular house (like most of the other older structures here in the Union Creek Ranger Station compound) was built during the Great Depression.

Members of the Civilian Conservation Corps built this PA’s House during 1935. Designed by Forest Service architects in the "rustic" style, many ranger stations and residences like this one sprang up in the National Forests during the 1930s. Decades later, many of them are gone..."

Hiked 700 feet down a steep slope to take a boat tour of the Crater Lake with a park ranger. The lake is 6 miles in diameter and was formed when a volcano imploded the cone of a big mountain. It is the deepest lake in the U.S. and but more famous for its pristine blue color.
